Calculating How Many Flower Buckets You’ll Need
I’ve included detailed information on this product listing and throughout the wedding section of my website to help you estimate how many flowers you’ll need. DIY flower orders do not include the in-depth consultations that come with full-service design, so the final responsibility for quantities, supplies, and execution rests with you. That said, I’m always happy to offer quick guidance if you’re feeling unsure about what to order.
How to estimate bucket count:
List every floral item you’re making (personal flowers, rehearsal, ceremony, and reception pieces).
Multiply each item by the quantity needed.
Multiply that number by the estimated stem “recipe” for each piece.
Example:
10 wide-mouth canning jar centerpieces × 15 stems each
(approximately 5 focal flowers + 5 fillers + 5 foliage)= 150 total stems
With an average of 55 stems per bucket, you’d need at least 3 flower buckets.
One Bucket Can Make (Approximate):
Compote vase centerpiece:
One bucket fills about 2-3 compote vases, depending on how full or airy you design. Expect 15 - 20 stems per arrangement.Wide-mouth 3” canning jars:
One bucket fills about 5–8 jars, depending on how airy you want to design. Expect 7–15 stems per arrangement.Bud vases:
A narrow 1”–1.5” opening bud vase typically holds 1-3 stems and offers a big impact with fewer flowers.Hand-tied bouquets:
One bucket can create approximately 2 - 3 medium bridemaids’ bouquets, depending on stem count.
The number of flowers needed for centerpieces depends heavily on the diameter of your vase opening. Wider vessels require more flowers and more design time.
Canning jars and bud vases are beginner-friendly.
For easier, faster designing, choose vessels that are deep enough to anchor stems without extra mechanics.
A 7” bowl or compote will need significantly more stems than a 3” mason jar.
Shallow, wide bowls require additional mechanics (floral tape, flower frogs, & chicken wire) to keep stems in place. Not beginner-friendly.
Always overestimate stem counts to account for breakage, design adjustments, and last-minute changes.
Flower Care Tips:
Flower stems work like straws, pulling water up to keep blooms fresh and hydrated. Clean water matters: cloudy water means bacteria, which can block the stem and shorten vase life. Start with a clean vase, fresh water, and freshly trimmed stems, and remove all foliage below the water line. Change the water and retrim stems every few days to help your flowers last as long as possible.
Every flower variety is unique and has a different vase life. Some flowers, like chrysanthemums, can last up to two weeks, while others, like poppies, may only last a few days. Optional: Add flower food to help nourish blooms and keep bacteria at bay.
Store flower buckets and finished pieces in a cool, air-conditioned space (ideally 50–60°F) until your event. A cool basement works well during hot weather.
Keep flowers out of direct sunlight.
Flowers should remain in water at all times — including while designing.
Delivery Area:
I provide local delivery services in the Franklin and Oneonta areas. Local pick-up at the farmstand at Misty Meadows Flower Farm/North Star Farm, 595 Franklin Heights, Franklin, NY. Porch pickup is available in Oneonta. However, if you reside outside of these regions, please email me to inquire if I can deliver to your address. Thank you!
Deliveries:
I aim to accommodate delivery requests whenever possible, but delivery times can’t be guaranteed—especially during busy weeks and holidays. If you have a preferred delivery window, please add it to the Special Delivery Instructions at checkout. Ordering a few days ahead during peak seasons is always appreciated.
If no one is available at the time of delivery, I’ll use my best judgment to leave the flower bucket in a safe, shaded location when weather permits, or I may reach out to arrange an alternate delivery time. For deliveries farther from the farm, I may contact the recipient in advance to confirm availability.
If you request that your bucket be left unattended (such as on a porch or doorstep), responsibility for the flowers transfers to the recipient upon delivery. I cannot guarantee the condition of flowers left outside and cannot issue refunds for buckets left unattended. A delivery photo may be taken for reference. I am not responsible for missing or damaged flowers once delivered under these circumstances.
Order Terms:
Every bulk flower bucket is harvested fresh and prepared by hand. Flowers are a natural, seasonal product, and varieties, colors, stem counts, and vase life may vary depending on availability and growing conditions. Buckets are designed for DIY use and are not arranged. If substitutions are necessary, they will be made with flowers of equal or greater value and a similar color palette or style. If I need to make a substitution, it will always be with equal or greater value and in the same style. If you’re unhappy with your order, please reach out within 24 hours of delivery so I can make it right. All prices are listed in USD. Sales tax is applied based on local rates.
Substitutions:
Because bulk flower buckets feature seasonal blooms, exact flower varieties cannot be guaranteed. Substitutions will always be made with equal or greater value, using the freshest flowers available at the time of harvest.
Cancellation Policy:
Once a bucket order is placed, I can accept cancellations or issue refunds, as long as I haven’t begun harvesting fresh flowers. You may update recipient information as long as the arrangement is not yet en route or delivered.
